Fire-Stopping

Fire-stopping is a fire protection system made of various components used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance rated wall and/or floor assemblies. When using a fire-stopping system, you are preventing fire from spreading from one place to the next by sealing off openings or possible areas where the fire could get through to another area.

Openings around wires, cables and other penetrations need to be sealed off to keep the fire-resistance ratings of wall and/or floor assemblies.  By filling these openings with fire-resistant materials, you are impeding the spread of fire.  If the openings in a fire rated assembly are left unprotected, the assembly then becomes void and the fire can spread throughout the building.

There are different types of fire-stopping systems.
